Mentoring Skills

This session has been written for members who will be involved in mentoring newly elected councillors and are looking for guidance on how to manage the role. 

The programme will provide learners with insights into the skills of being an effective mentor, together with ideas on different approaches and strategies.

Programme Objectives

By the end of this programme delegates will be able to:

  1. Identify the role of the mentor and explain the boundaries and limits associated with being a mentor
  2. Explain how and why people learn and make use of a variety of learning strategies
  3. Develop well-formed outcomes in partnership with the learner
  4. Provide high quality feedback.

Further information

Although advertised as a two-hour session, this programme can be expanded into a longer period, where more detailed techniques are explored. 

It is a highly practical and grounded session which will provide participants with useful tools that will impact positively on their mentoring approaches.
